The church there, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmouginstourisme.com\u002Fculture-et-patrimoine\u002Fle-village\u002Fau-coeur-du-vieux-village\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur\u003C\u002Fa>, was begun in the 11th century and enlarged in the 18th and 19th; it still holds gilded wooden statues and a 15th-century crucifix. Since 1954 the town hall has occupied the Saint-Bernardin chapel, built in 1618, and weddings are still held there.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 1em;\">The streets carry traces of trades you would not expect here. On Rue des Orfèvres, Bernardin Bareste struck coins for the Abbey of Lérins in 1666. Two stops along the way are devoted to Chagall, and blue signs lead the rest of the way to the Fondation. The novelist \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FAndr%C3%A9_Malraux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">André Malraux\u003C\u002Fa>, France&#8217;s minister of cultural affairs at the time, inaugurated the Fondation on July 28, 1964, and declared in his opening speech: &#8220;This is not a museum.&#8221;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 style=\"font-size:1.2em;line-height:1.35;margin:2.2em 0 .7em;\">\u003Cstrong>The artists built the Fondation alongside the architect\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 1em;\">Sert designed a building of brick, terracotta and concrete that reinterprets the Mediterranean village. Its two large white roof vaults, which collect rainwater for the pools and shade the galleries, have become the symbol of the place, and &#8220;light traps&#8221; bring indirect daylight into the rooms. Each artist took a share of the site. Giacometti wanted his sculptures gathered in the courtyard that bears his name, and he chose the spot for each one himself; the Fondation owns both versions of Walking Man. In 1948 he moved into the villa La Galloise with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FFran%C3%A7oise_Gilot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">Françoise Gilot\u003C\u002Fa>, his partner at the time, and their son Claude; their daughter Paloma was born the following year, and he bought a former perfume factory, the Fournas, to use as a painting and sculpture studio. He left for \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.cannes-france.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">Cannes\u003C\u002Fa> in 1955, but came back in 1961 to marry \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FJacqueline_Roque\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">Jacqueline Roque\u003C\u002Fa>, in great secrecy, at the town hall that then stood on Place de la Libération, the very square where the château stands.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 style=\"font-size:1.2em;line-height:1.35;margin:2.2em 0 .7em;\">\u003Cstrong>The chapel of the Lérins monks once served as an olive oil mill\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 1em;\">Lords of Vallauris from 1038, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.abbayedelerins.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">monks of Lérins\u003C\u002Fa> built a small castle and its chapel in the 12th century as a residence for their prior. While the château was rebuilt in 1568, the chapel has kept its nave under a pointed barrel vault, closed by a half-domed apse, and its walls of gray, pink and ocher stone. Sold as state property in 1791 and never returned to worship, it served for a time as an olive oil mill before being listed as a historic monument in 1951. Before reaching the chapel, the two compositions were exhibited in Rome and Milan alongside \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.museoreinasofia.es\u002Fen\u002Fcollections\u002Fartwork\u002Fguernica\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">Guernica\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FMassacre_in_Korea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">Massacre in Korea\u003C\u002Fa>. They were installed there in 1954, and Picasso donated them to the French state in 1956 without their ever leaving the chapel, which was inaugurated as a national museum on September 19, 1959. A few days earlier, a third panel painted in 1958, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmusees-nationaux-alpesmaritimes.fr\u002Fpicasso\u002Fcollection\u002Fobjet\u002Fles-quatre-parties-du-monde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">The Four Parts of the World\u003C\u002Fa>, had been put in place at the back of the chapel: its four figures, an image of harmony between peoples, block the old door that once opened onto the square.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 style=\"font-size:1.2em;line-height:1.35;margin:2.2em 0 .7em;\">\u003Cstrong>Peace answers War from one wall to the other\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 1em;\">On the first wall, a hearse drawn by caparisoned horses moves forward, driven by a horned figure with a bloodstained knife, and the hooves trample a book being consumed by flames. Facing the team stands a naked fighter for peace against a blue background, his shield bearing a dove, and beneath the dove, veiled by a glaze, the face of Françoise Gilot can just be made out. Picasso gave the third to Vallauris in 1949, and the town council&#8217;s resolution of October 21 records his wish &#8220;that one of his works should live among the people of Vallauris.&#8221; The statue waited in the chapel for the artist to choose a spot for it. That spot was the market square, since renamed Place Paul-Isnard, where nearly three thousand people, among them the poet \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FPaul_%C3%89luard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">Paul Éluard\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FJean_Cocteau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:#40877F;font-weight:700;text-decoration:none;\">Jean Cocteau\u003C\u002Fa>, attended its unveiling on August 6, 1950, and the bronze thus became Picasso&#8217;s first sculpture placed in a public space, as he had wanted.
